Are You Open For Crime? Holiday Safety And Security Information
The holiday season is again upon us and, sadly, that means that the criminals are out looking to commit crimes and make us their victims. Unfortunately, all too often we inadvertently assist these criminals in their activities by not taking the proper precautions to safeguard our homes and property.
Did you know that in almost half of all residential and vehicle burglaries, the thieves simply walk in through unlocked doors or crawl in through open windows? All of the security devices in the world will not protect us unless we follow a few simple, but important, safety rules.
1. DO NOT leave your doors unlocked or open, even for a short time. Most would-be burglars will go from place to place looking for an easy entry point.
2. DO NOT leave your windows open or unlocked while away from home. An open window is an invitation for a burglar to come in and help himself.
3. DO NOT hide a spare key outside of your house. Most burglars know exactly where to look and will find it. Consider giving a spare key to a trusted neighbor as an alternative. It's much safer.
4.DO NOT put personal identification information on your key ring. This way, if you lose your keys, they cannot be traced to your residence. In the event that you do lose your keys, it is always best that you change the cylinders in your locks immediately.
5. DO NOT leave valuables where they can be seen through an open window or door. This is an invitation for a potential burglar to enter your home or car. Most burglars will go from house to house and look into windows for just such an opportunity.
6. DO make sure that all tools and ladders are put away and nothing is left out in the yard. Everything should be in a locked garage or shed. Your tools could assist a burglar in gaining entry to your home.
7. DO leave some outside lights on at night. A light makes your home or vehicle an undesirable target for a burglar.
