The PowerPuff Girls were a breath of fresh air when they first hit the Cartoon Network. At last, some superheroes my daughter and her friends could identify with -- not only are they female, but they are also just little girls. Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup adorn Megan's backpack, her favorite dinnerware and a poster in her room.
So we were looking forward to seeing the first PowerPuff movie.
Unfortunately, unless you are a huge fan of the show, I would suggest waiting for this one to hit the video store. Yes, the animation is excellent, with the fabulous retro-60's look of the series... and we finally get the full story of how the Professor created the girls and accidentally slipped in that portion of Chemical X... and how a little lab chimp named JoJo became Townsville's evil nemesis MojoJoJo. But maybe that's the problem with the film - it is so reverent to the girls' creation story, and the laughs are so few that the film is a real disappointment. I hope director (and PowerPuff creator) Craig McCracken and his writers Charlie Bean, Lauren Faust, Paul Rudish, and Don Shank have more fun with it next time.
If your kids are real PowerPuff fans and just have to see this movie now, do get to the theater early enough to catch the Dexter's Lab short that runs ahead of the feature. Now that's funny.
